The history of hockey and its relationship with Egypt!!!!
Hockey is one of the very ancient sports whose history goes back thousands of years. Even the drawings on the temples in Egypt say that it has been in circulation for thousands of years. It is one of the groups of sports in which two teams compete trying to score the ball or puck into the opposing team’s goal using a hockey stick. In many regions, there is a sport (always called field hockey or ice hockey) referred to just as hockey.
Curved sticks and balls have existed in the history of many cultures. In Egypt, there are 4,000-year-old inscribed sculptures of teams with sticks and slings - Hurling teams dating from before 1272 BC. In Ireland - there are pictures drawn from about 600 BC. In ancient Greece, where this game is thought to have been called kerētízein or kerhtízein (κερητίζειν) because it was played with a hooked or semi-hooked stick (kéras, κέρας), in Inner Mongolia, China, and Daur people have been playing biko for about 1,000 years – a game similar to contemporary field hockey.
The greatest evidence for the existence of hockey-like games in the Middle Ages is the legislation relating to sports and games. There is the Galloway Law - similar to the Declaration of Edward - which was implemented in 1527 and prohibited certain types of ball games, including hockey.
By the nineteenth century, historical games, in their forms and divisions, began to separate and merge to become what they are today. The formation of committees authorized to set laws and regulations began, and local and international entities emerged to organize local and international competitions. During that period, ice hockey developed as a branch of field hockey to suit the icy conditions in Canada and the northern United States. The inscriptions in the Beni Hassan tombs testify that the ancient Egyptians were the first to practice this game. The people of the South Valley knew it under the name “Hawksha” and it was played using palm leaves.
Until an English games officer named Luker came to Egypt. He worked at Zagazig Secondary School in 1919 and developed the game there. Then he moved to the Khedive and Saadia schools, and the game spread among Egyptian schools.
This game consists of two teams, and each team includes about six players, and five of these players seek to pass the disc between them to score the largest number of points.
The sixth player is the goalkeeper, who is responsible for guarding the goal and preventing goals and points from being scored by the other team. This game depends on three different rounds of time.
